SY 2018-19 Welcome Letter
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome to a new school year! I hope you have had a relaxing summer and that your children are refreshed and ready to learn. My name is Helen Mason and I am a Language Arts teacher at Paradise Honors High School. This is my sixth year at Paradise and I couldn't ask for a better place to teach. This year, I teach 9th grade Honors and 10th grade English.
I am very excited to be here and cannot wait to get to know your children. I’m expecting that my class will be a great opportunity for the students to boost their reading and writing skills, consider their world in a new way, and to have some fun while doing it.
In class, your child will receive an overview of my policies, procedures, and expectations. This summary also includes information on what they can expect in terms of homework, projects, class work and, of course, grading. I hope you will look it over and let me know if you or your child needs any clarification. The
beginning of the year can be tough as they will receive so much information and I do not want them to feel overwhelmed. I will revisit this information periodically to remind your child what is in it. They should not worry! Students should place all the information I give them in their binders for future reference.
A few points that I would like to highlight:
Building solid communication with both my students and you is very important to our success and I hope that you will keep me up to date if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s performance in my class. If you need anything as the year progresses, please do not hesitate to contact me.
If you have not already done so, I hope you will stop in to meet me in room B124 so I can start learning faces and names.
Here’s to an exciting new year!

A few points that I would like to highlight:
- ON-TIME ASSIGNMENTS: I have a requirement that my students turn in their work on time in order to
- receive full credit. If there is a problem that might prevent this, please stay in touch with me so that your child can avoid losing points for issues outside of his/her control. Late assignments will also fall under the Academic Detention policy found in your student handbook.
- ABSENCES: If your child is absent, remind him/her to check with me about any missed work that he/she might have to complete. As per the school’s missed work policy, students are allowed one day to make up their work for each day they miss.
- FIRST DAY SUPPLIES: Students will need the following items on the first day:
- Highlighter
- Note/index cards
- Sticky notes
- Loose leaf paper for essays
- Pens or sharpened pencils with erasers
- Somewhere to store papers distributed in class (three-ringed binder with tab dividers or two-pocket folder)
- Spiral notebook for note-taking
- Each student will also need to purchase the quarter's literature text within the first week of the quarter.
- HOMEWORK: Students will have a project or paper to complete with each literature student we do. They will have time to work on these assignments in class, but completing some of the work at home is usually needed. In additional, work that is not completed during class will become homework that night. I encourage all students to use the time they are given in class to avoid having homework.
Building solid communication with both my students and you is very important to our success and I hope that you will keep me up to date if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s performance in my class.
